Biogas and RNG

Proper flow metering and analysis of biogas or landfill gas is important, whether it be for custody transfer or process control. Biogas’ unique characteristics require unique solutions.  Our experience with flow measurement, quality analysis, and automation provides tailored solutions for your biogas or renewable natural gas facilities.

Fiscal measurement is crucial for biogas facilities.  The commercial transaction and resulting change of ownership at the outlet and, sometimes, at the inlet of the upgrading facility demands accuracy, repeatability, and availability of the flow measurement system.  The proper flow meter and flow computer selection are critical as these are the “cash registers” of the facility.  EPI&C’s experience with the design and supply of flow metering, computing and proving solutions will ensure the custody transfer obligations are met.

Analysis of the gas feeding the upgrading facility and the renewable natural gas (RNG) produced is necessary.  It is important to ensure the biogas or landfill gas feeding the upgrading facility be within design ranges.  Depending on the upgrading technology certain impurities or combination of impurities may be harmful to the equipment.  Action must be taken if the composition is outside of design ranges.  The RNG at the outlet of the upgrading facility must be within pipeline specifications.  Action must be taken if the RNG does not meet pipeline specifications.  EPIC’s analytic solutions and buildings offer quick, reliable, and accurate measurements in both scenarios.

Our flow measurement skids and analyzer building packaged system solutions can combined into a single package.  The package is fully pre-installed and tested prior to shipment, greatly reducing construction cost and time.  Moreover, we can offer a fully integrated system to monitor and control all processes in the biogas facility.  Uptime of the plant is important, our system will automatically regulate the process within desired operating parameters.  If excursions are detected clear alarm messages are provided to alert operators of the situation.  These messages can be sent as SMS or e-mail messages in addition to remote monitoring stations.
